Our Story

The Madison Area Community Land Trust Corporation (MACLT) is dedicated to preserving the affordability of land for community uses, including housing, urban agriculture, and commercial space. By utilizing a long-term ground lease, MACLT has established over 60 permanently-affordable homes that remain accessible for low-income and first-time homebuyers for generations. With an initial public subsidy, these homes are affordable for families earning 80% of the area median income or lower. MACLT owns the land beneath the homes, allowing homeowners to lease the land through a 98-year renewable ground lease.

Impact

MACLT has empowered over 120 low-income families to secure affordable homes. Remarkably, the foreclosure rate among CLT homeowners is just 1/10th of that of conventional homeowners. Since the launch of the Maintenance Program in 2021, nearly $1 million has been allocated for maintenance assistance, benefiting 96% of homeowners in the program.
