Our Story

Mabou Mines was founded in 1970 by a visionary group of artists, including JoAnne Akalaitis, Lee Breuer, Philip Glass, Ruth Maleczech, and David Warrilow. Emerging from a retreat in Nova Scotia, the collective created its first theater piece, Red Horse Animation. Over the decades, Mabou Mines has evolved into a collaborative force in the arts, producing over 120 works and earning more than 100 major awards.
