Our Story

The Maasai Development Project (MDP) originated from the deep friendships formed between Jan Latsha, Gwen Edwards, and the Maasai women of Ongata Rongai, Kenya. These connections blossomed under the shade of trees, where they shared their hopes and dreams for their children. In 1994, the journey took a significant turn with Bible studies and literacy classes, leading to the establishment of a Maasai church and the sponsorship of lay pastors. Recognizing the urgent needs of the community, MDP was formally established in 1998 to address these challenges.

Impact

MDP is dedicated to providing at-risk girls with a safe educational environment, helping them escape harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and forced early marriage. The organization also promotes community health education and offers essential services like food programs and medical clinics.
