About Luzerne Music Center

Founded in 1980 by Philadelphia Orchestra cellist Bert Phillips and Steinway pianist Toby Blumenthal, Luzerne Music Center (LMC) has dedicated itself to offering exceptional musical instruction to gifted young musicians in a nurturing summer camp environment. Located on the picturesque shores of Lake Luzerne, New York, LMC welcomes students aged 9 to 18 from diverse backgrounds, ensuring that financial circumstances do not hinder their passion for music.

A Legacy of Musical Excellence

The vision for LMC began when Bert and Toby sought a summer home while Bert was in residency with the Philadelphia Orchestra. After discovering the former Camp Tekakwitha site, they purchased the 20 wooded acres that now house LMC. With a commitment to community and a love for music, they transformed the camp into a haven for aspiring musicians. Over the years, LMC has attracted world-renowned guest artists, composers, and conductors, enriching the educational experience for students.

Impacting Lives Through Music

Every summer, LMC provides world-class music instruction to nearly 150 passionate young musicians. Approximately 70% of these students receive financial aid, allowing them to immerse themselves in a transformative musical experience. Throughout the summer, students and faculty perform weekly concerts, contributing to the vibrant regional music scene. The annual Concert Series features nearly 30 performances, including the Luzerne Chamber Music Festival, which has hosted esteemed musicians from The Philadelphia Orchestra and beyond.
