Our Story
The Lummi Island Heritage Trust was founded to protect the unique natural landscapes of Lummi Island. The journey began in the 1950s when Carl and Ilse Otto settled on the island. Carl, an inventor, and Ilse, a talented artist, cultivated the land and created a legacy. After their passing, the Otto farm was entrusted to Phyllis Lockwood, who nurtured the land until the Heritage Trust acquired it in 2000. The Otto Preserve became the first land protection project, safeguarding open spaces, native forests, and vital wildlife habitats.
