Our Story

Open Door began its ministry in 1997, initiated by members of Broadway Church of Christ who recognized the urgent need for community and resources among individuals experiencing homelessness. Initially operating from a donated building in North Overton, Open Door served as both a church and a community center, offering a safe haven for those in need. In 2004, the organization relocated to its current site on 13th Street in South Overton, allowing for further growth and expansion.

Transitioning to an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2011, Open Door has significantly broadened its programming, evolving from a grassroots initiative into a comprehensive Christian community development organization. In 2017, the name change from Carpenter’s Church to Open Door was implemented to better reflect its mission and future aspirations.

Since its inception, Open Door has been dedicated to providing essential resources to individuals facing poverty, homelessness, and sex trafficking, all within a nurturing and supportive community.
