Our Story

The Lowry Park Zoo originated in the 1930s as a small municipal department, showcasing Florida native species. Over the decades, it evolved but faced challenges in meeting modern zoo standards. In 1982, community leaders established the Lowry Park Zoo Association, transforming the Zoo into a world-class facility through a public-private partnership. Today, the Lowry Park Zoological Society of Tampa, Inc. manages a 56-acre zoo that opened in 1988, earning accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Our Impact

ZooTampa features 56 acres of naturalistic exhibits set in a lush tropical garden, focusing on endangered and vulnerable species from climates similar to Tampa Bay. The Zoo's habitats prioritize animal well-being while engaging guests and inspiring wildlife conservation.
