Our Story

ZooTampa originated in the 1930s as a small municipal zoo featuring Florida native species. Over the decades, it evolved into a modern facility through the efforts of community leaders who established the Lowry Park Zoo Association in 1982. This public-private partnership transformed the zoo into a world-class destination, culminating in the opening of a 24-acre facility in 1988, which earned accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Impact on Wildlife

Today, ZooTampa spans 56 acres, showcasing naturalistic exhibits that emphasize endangered and vulnerable species from climates akin to Tampa Bay. With over 1,000 animals and participation in nearly 100 AZA networks, the zoo has garnered awards for its exceptional animal conservation programs.
