About Los Angeles Poverty Department

Founded in 1985 by director-performer-activist John Malpede, Los Angeles Poverty Department is the first performance group in the nation made up principally of homeless individuals. This pioneering organization creates performances and multidisciplinary artworks that connect the experiences of those living in poverty to the social forces that shape their lives and communities.

Impact of LAPD

Los Angeles Poverty Department has successfully raised the value placed on the arts by social service providers and policymakers, creating a narrative that supports community initiatives and challenges stereotypes used to justify displacement.
