Our Story
The Los Alamos Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JJAB) was established in 2004 following a juvenile justice conference led by then Lt. Governor Diane Denish. This initiative brought together community leaders from Los Alamos to address the pressing issues faced by youth in the juvenile justice system. Under the leadership of First District Court Judge Barbara Vigil and Municipal Court Judge Alan Kirk, the Los Alamos committee began to research effective community strategies for juvenile issues.
JJAB was formed to ensure that local services were available for youth involved in the juvenile justice system. The Board's mission is to develop a comprehensive strategic plan that addresses prevention, intervention, and graduated sanctions for youth in need.
Impact
JJAB has significantly expanded its services, now offering prevention and intervention programs for youth aged birth through 18. With over 10 dedicated staff members, JJAB directly manages six programs and funds an additional nine, positively impacting up to 200 youth and their families each year.
