Longmont Emergency Unit
EIN: 84-0536967 · Longmont, CO
Our Story
On December 9, 1956, a tragic incident involving three young brothers drowning in a lake near Longmont revealed a critical gap in emergency response capabilities. This led to the formation of the Longmont Emergency Unit, which officially began operations on June 26, 1957. Initially comprised of military servicemen, LEU has evolved into a fully volunteer organization, dedicated to providing life-saving services 24/7.
Commitment to Excellence
Over the years, LEU has adapted to the latest rescue techniques, focusing on effective rescues rather than mere recovery. The organization has been a pioneer in emergency response, being the first in the nation to utilize an emergency locator-transmitting device for locating downed aircraft in 1974. LEU has also introduced advanced tools like the "jaws of life" for victim extrication, significantly enhancing safety in Boulder County since 1975.
Community Collaboration
LEU works closely with local police, sheriff, and fire departments, providing essential support during major events and emergencies. From traffic control at festivals to assisting with fire fighter rehabilitation, LEU's volunteers are always ready to serve. Their notable rescue of two women from the St. Vrain River in 1995 earned them the prestigious Higgins-Langley Award in 1996, marking them as the first all-volunteer team to receive this honor.
Impact
LEU's services are provided free of charge to the public, relying solely on donations and fundraising to cover operational costs. This ensures that the community receives the highest level of emergency response without financial barriers.
