Our Story
Long Island Adolescent and Family Services Inc (LIAFS) was established by a passionate group of staff and volunteers from the Middle Country School District, driven by the urgent need for local resources for children affected by abuse and neglect. The Community House SAFEHOUSE, built with volunteer labor and materials, served as a prototype for additional homes opened in Ridge (1990), Stony Brook (1997), and Port Jefferson Station (2000). Since its inception in 1988, LIAFS has evolved from a small agency focused on the Selden-Centereach community to a vital regional resource for Long Island.
In 2005, LIAFS received approval from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) to launch specialized services for youth and children in our Stony Brook and Centereach Residences. By 2007, in collaboration with state agencies, LIAFS initiated a Supportive/Mental Health Counseling Program. In 2010, a partnership with the Suffolk County Department of Labor led to the creation of the SWEP program, aimed at providing job training for the unemployed in our county.
