Our Story

Founded in 1981 by retired schoolteacher Alma C. Liotta, Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County (LVSC) has dedicated itself to transforming lives through literacy. Initially focused on teaching English-speaking adults to read, LVSC has expanded its services to meet the needs of a diverse immigrant population in Somerset County. By providing essential literacy programs, LVSC helps individuals overcome language barriers and fully engage in their communities.

Impact

Last year, LVSC provided over 4,000 hours of free tutoring to 293 adult learners, resulting in significant achievements such as 18 students becoming U.S. citizens and 135 improving their reading abilities. This impact highlights the importance of literacy in fostering personal and societal success.

Why Donate?

Your donation to LVSC supports free literacy services that empower adults to enhance their English skills, enabling them to participate in the community, achieve personal goals, and secure better employment opportunities.
