Our Story

Founded in 1971, Literacy Services of Indian River County began with a small group of dedicated women who recognized the urgent need for adult literacy services. Initially operating from local churches, the organization has grown significantly, establishing its first Board of Directors in 1975 and receiving its nonprofit designation in 1981. Today, Literacy Services operates in libraries across the county, proudly partnering with United Way and Pro Literacy to enhance the lives of adults through education.

Impact

In Indian River County, 1 in 5 adults struggles with basic literacy skills, affecting their ability to complete job applications, read newspapers, and assist their children with schoolwork. Improving the literacy skills of parents is crucial for the academic success of their children, making this mission vital for the community.
