Our Story
Lion's Pride Mentoring, Inc. was founded in 2017 by Sean Healy, an education advocate who recognized a critical need for improved student retention at Baker College Prep in South Chicago. Despite the school's impressive academic achievements, freshman retention rates were alarmingly low, averaging less than 60%. Inspired by the University of Chicago's To and Through initiative, Healy sought to empower students to become the change they wished to see in their schools.
Healy identified a dual challenge: not only did freshmen need support, but upperclassmen also felt disempowered as leaders. Lion's Pride was created to address both issues by investing in upperclassmen, equipping them with essential college and career skills. These student leaders serve as positive role models, providing daily peer mentoring to freshmen, fostering a supportive environment that helps younger students build positive identities and achieve their goals.
With the help of Jasmine Gilstrap, who played a pivotal role in developing the curriculum, Lion's Pride quickly gained recognition. The program's success at Baker College Prep led to its expansion across Chicago, and in September 2019, Lion's Pride became a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Through their unwavering commitment to educational equity, Healy and Gilstrap have positively impacted countless students.
