About Lindsay Wildlife Experience

More than 60 years ago, Alexander “Sandy” Lindsay ignited a passion for the natural world in the community of Walnut Creek, particularly among children. What began as a humble garage filled with locally collected specimens and the occasional wild animal has blossomed into a vibrant educational institution known as the Lindsay Wildlife Experience. This grassroots organization has evolved significantly since its inception, transitioning from informal classes and neighborhood hikes to a fully-fledged wildlife hospital and educational museum.

Our Journey

In 1955, the Diablo Junior Museum Association was formed, marking the official beginning of the Lindsay Wildlife Experience. Initially housed in an elementary school, the museum offered summer classes and field trips focused on the natural world. In 1962, it was renamed the Alexander Lindsay Junior Museum to honor its late founder. The need for a permanent location became evident, leading to a move in 1965 to a water pump house in Larkey Park, where the museum could develop a permanent collection of live, non-releasable native wildlife.

As urban growth intensified, the museum became a sanctuary for injured and orphaned wild animals. In 1970, it took a significant step forward by establishing the first wildlife hospital in the country, which remains one of the largest today. The museum transitioned to independent operation in 1986 and was re-accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 1990, affirming its commitment to quality programming and management.

Impact and Education

Today, the Lindsay Wildlife Experience treats over 5,000 wild animal patients annually and educates approximately 100,000 visitors each year. The organization is dedicated to wildlife rehabilitation, conservation efforts, and educating the public about native California wildlife. With a team of veterinarians, husbandry experts, biologists, and educators, the Lindsay Wildlife Experience continues to inspire and engage the community.
