Our Story
Founded in 1973 by Leigh Derby, LIFESPAN began as St. Mark’s Center to provide educational opportunities for children with significant developmental disabilities who were excluded from public schooling in Charlotte, North Carolina. With the support of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and the Arc of Mecklenburg County, the program quickly grew, necessitating a move to a larger facility on North Graham Street by 1980. This expansion allowed for the introduction of adult services and outreach beyond the Charlotte region. In 2000, the organization rebranded to LIFESPAN, Inc. to reflect its commitment to supporting individuals throughout their entire lifespan. Today, LIFESPAN operates 8 creative campuses, 3 inclusive childcare facilities, 9 group homes, and 13 alternative family living homes, serving 20 counties in North Carolina.
