Our Story

Founded by Alison Macrina in response to government mass surveillance revelations and the Black Lives Matter movement, Library Freedom Project aims to empower librarians to advocate for privacy, intellectual freedom, and information democracy. Starting with classes and privacy software installations in public libraries, the initiative has grown to collaborate with organizations like the ACLU and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, training thousands of library workers and launching the Library Freedom Institute.

Our Impact

Library Freedom Project has successfully trained thousands of library workers, fostering a community of nearly 150 members across the US, Canada, and Mexico. This network collaborates on resources, programming, and policy to promote information democracy.
