Our Story
Founded in 1951 by Alvin Maxson and John Nepp, Leonardo First Aid Squad began its journey with a single used Oldsmobile parked at Maxson's home. Emergency calls were received at the Brentwood Hotel, prompting members to respond from their homes. Over the years, the squad has evolved significantly, moving from a small garage to its current location on Viola Ave, where it has expanded to accommodate a range of emergency vehicles and equipment.
Throughout its history, Leonardo First Aid Squad has faced challenges, including devastating fires in 1981 and 1990 that threatened its operations. However, the resilience of its members ensured that ambulances were saved, and the squad continued to grow. Today, it operates with a first responder vehicle, two ambulances, a rescue truck, a dive truck, and two boats, providing essential services to the community of Middletown and surrounding areas.
The squad also nurtures future generations through its Junior First Aiders program, now known as the EMS Cadets, fostering a spirit of service and dedication among young volunteers.
