Our Story

The Lens on Life Project was born from a deep-rooted passion for photography, inspired by the legacy of Bonni, a visionary who founded a photography gallery in New York City during the 1980s. With the guidance of Dennis, a seasoned film director, the founders learned to harness the power of a camera to tell stories and push boundaries. In 2016, this passion transformed into a mission: to empower vulnerable youth through a unique photography curriculum designed to foster self-expression and community pride.

Impacting Lives Through Photography

Initial pilot projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Brooklyn demonstrated the profound impact of photography on youth identity. Participants not only learned the art of photography but also became working photographers, generating income and uplifting their communities. Male participants in the DRC began capturing moments at weddings and local events, while female participants, many overcoming trauma, used photography as a powerful tool for empowerment and self-expression.

Building Skills for the Future

Recognizing the need for additional skills, Lens on Life developed a computer literacy course tailored to equip youth for the evolving job market. This initiative ensures that students are not only proficient in photography but also prepared for the digital age, enhancing their employability and self-sufficiency.
