Our Story
In the mid-1970s, a group of dedicated private attorneys recognized the overwhelming legal needs of individuals unable to afford representation. This led to the establishment of Northwest Minnesota Legal Services in 1976, a response to the growing demand for legal assistance. Initially, private attorneys participated in a civil legal aid model known as 'judicare,' which allowed them to accept cases with nominal compensation. By 1985, the organization received a grant from the Legal Services Corporation, enabling the hiring of its first staff attorney. In 1991, the name was officially changed to Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota. Today, a collaborative effort between staff and private attorneys continues to address the significant legal needs in the region.
