Our Story

In 1971, a dedicated group of community leaders in Ann Arbor came together to form the Washtenaw Land Conservancy, driven by a mission to protect the Bird Hills Nature Area from development. This grassroots effort sparked a movement focused on land conservation across southern Michigan. Over the years, the organization evolved, merging with the Potawatomi Land Trust in 1999 to create the Washtenaw Land Trust, which was later renamed Legacy Land Conservancy in 2009. Today, the organization proudly serves Jackson and Lenawee Counties, working tirelessly to safeguard land for nature, agriculture, and recreation.

Our Impact

Since its inception, Legacy Land Conservancy has successfully protected over 10,000 acres of land through conservation easements, public preserves, and collaborative partnerships. This commitment ensures the preservation of vital natural landscapes for generations to come.
