Our Story
Founded in 1981 by Dorothy Brennan, Learn to Read of St Lucie County was established to combat the alarming literacy crisis after a tragic incident highlighted the dangers of illiteracy. Since its incorporation in 1983, this nonprofit organization has dedicated itself to providing free, confidential instruction in reading, writing, and speaking English.

With over 2.6 million adults in Florida lacking basic reading skills, Learn to Read aims to break the cycle of poverty that affects 43% of those with the lowest literacy levels. By offering essential literacy services, the organization empowers adults, children, and families to achieve a better life.
