Learn and Serve Tampa, Inc. is a teacher-driven initiative dedicated to making service-learning projects a reality for local K-12 students. Founded by Kristy Verdi, who has been implementing service-learning in her social studies classrooms since 1999, this nonprofit emerged from the need for a support system for educators wishing to engage students in meaningful community service. By connecting classrooms to local causes, students can experience the real purpose of learning.
In 2024, Learn and Serve Tampa engaged over 600 youth in the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Participants packed over 480 meals, delivered gift baskets to 23 City of Tampa Fire Stations, and created over 700 biographies to honor the 2,977 victims of 9/11. Youth contributed over 100 hours of service assisting with the American Flag memorial.
