Empowering Latino Students

Empowering Latino Students Through Education

The Latino Scholarship Fund was founded in 1994 by Ileana Velazquez and Peter Kalman in Danbury, Connecticut, to combat the low percentage of Latino graduates pursuing higher education. Initially, less than 20% of Danbury High School’s Latino graduates continued their education. In just six months, the organization raised $10,000 and awarded its first scholarships in 1996. Since then, over $1,000,000 has been raised and awarded to more than 550 Latino graduates, significantly increasing the percentage of students continuing their education to nearly 80%.

Impacting Lives and Futures

The Latino Scholarship Fund has transformed the educational landscape for Latino students in Danbury, raising over $1,000,000 in scholarships and empowering more than 550 graduates to pursue their dreams.
