Promoting Latino Arts and Culture
Providing Educational Opportunities

Our Story

Founded in 1982 by visionary artists Nelson Tamayo, Nelson Landrieu, Mateo Gomez, and Marta García, Teatro LATEA emerged from a deep concern for the underrepresentation of Latinos in North American theater. After the closure of the Solidaridad Humana bilingual educational program, the founders transformed a former public school building into a vibrant communal theater space, ensuring a dedicated venue for Latino arts in downtown New York City.

Our Impact

Teatro LATEA has made significant strides in promoting Latino representation in the performing arts, enriching the cultural landscape of New York City.
