Our Story

Founded in 2018 by Tom Fernandez and Julie Shifman, Last Mile Food Rescue addresses the pressing issues of food insecurity and food waste in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region. By connecting food donors with nonprofits serving food-insecure individuals, the organization utilizes a volunteer-driven model powered by innovative technology. Inspired by the staggering amount of food waste in their community, the founders aim to ensure that good food reaches those in need instead of ending up in landfills.

Impact

In 2022 alone, Last Mile Food Rescue mobilized over 800 volunteers to complete 13,000 food rescues, successfully rescuing over 2.3 million pounds of food. This effort directly impacts food insecurity and significantly reduces food waste in the Greater Cincinnati area.
