About Lakeland Aero Club
The Lakeland Aero Club, founded in August 2011 by aviation philanthropist Mr. James C. Ray, is dedicated to engaging today’s youth in the world of aviation. Starting as an after-school program for students at the Central Florida Aerospace Academy, the club has evolved into a thriving nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire and educate future aviators.
Our Journey
With the support of Mr. Ray, the Lakeland Aero Club received its 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status in February 2015, marking a significant milestone in its journey. One of the club's most notable achievements was the restoration of a 1953 Piper Super Cub, originally used by the Turkish Air Force. After three years of dedicated work, the aircraft received its first U.S. Airworthiness certificate from the FAA on April 1, 2015. This accomplishment was showcased at EAA's AirVenture 2015 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where the club gained national recognition.
Impact on Youth
The Lakeland Aero Club provides invaluable hands-on experience in restoring, maintaining, and flying antique general aviation airplanes. This practical education significantly contributes to the development of youth interested in pursuing careers in aviation.
