Our Story
Founded in 1992 by Dr. Richard Bailey, the Lake Merritt Institute is a community-driven nonprofit that collaborates with volunteers, schools, and the City of Oakland to enhance the health of Lake Merritt.
Impact
Since December 1996, the Institute has removed between 1,000 to 6,000 pounds of trash from Lake Merritt each month, significantly improving the lake's cleanliness and health.
