Our Story

Lake James Environmental Association is a dedicated, volunteer-driven organization committed to safeguarding the watershed of Lake James, North Carolina. Established in 1973, LJEA focuses on protecting the lakes, rivers, and streams flowing through Avery, Burke, and McDowell counties. This vital watershed spans 247,000 acres and faces threats from development, pollution, and erosion. Through advocacy, education, and community engagement, LJEA strives to preserve the natural beauty and clean water of this region for generations to come.

Our Impact

LJEA has successfully opposed harmful developments, including a proposed wastewater treatment plant, and has played a crucial role in promoting water quality initiatives. The organization actively participates in clean-up efforts and has expanded Lake James State Park, ensuring a healthier environment for all.
