Our Story
The Lake Chelan Food Bank began with a simple bookcase filled with rice, beans, and canned goods, located in the parish hall of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church. Reverend Gary Jones envisioned a community where no one would go hungry, and with the support of local clergy, this dream blossomed. Within two years, nearly 1,000 families were served, and the need for a larger space became evident.
Over the years, the food bank has experienced remarkable growth, fueled by the generosity of the Chelan community. From food drives organized by children to donations from local gardeners and orchardists, the community has rallied to support those in need. Volunteers have dedicated countless hours to ensure that food is ordered, prepared, and distributed effectively.
Despite the overwhelming support, the food bank has faced ongoing challenges with space. From the humble beginnings of a single bookcase to multiple relocations, the need for a larger facility has become critical. Currently, the food bank serves an average of 120 families weekly, distributing around 10,000 pounds of food. Additionally, deliveries are made to elderly clients who cannot visit the food bank. As winter approaches, the demand for assistance increases, highlighting the urgent need for expansion.
The Lake Chelan Food Bank Board is actively seeking solutions to this challenge, whether through a larger facility or land to build on. The mission remains clear: to keep the cupboards of those in need filled with healthy and adequate food supplies. Join in this legacy of compassion and support.
