Our Story

The Kalamazoo Ladies’ Library Association, established in 1852, is the first women’s club in Michigan and the third in the nation. Initially formed as a sewing group, it evolved into a subscription library, leading to the creation of Kalamazoo's first public library. The historic LLA building, constructed in 1878 through the efforts of its all-female membership, stands as a National Historic Landmark.

Impact

With a commitment to preserving its historic building, the LLA supports community service and literacy initiatives through various activities.
