Ladder Up

Our Story

Founded in 1994 by Robert Burke, Ladder Up began as a grassroots effort to help struggling families in Chicago secure unclaimed tax credits. With the support of 90 volunteers, the organization returned over $150,000 in tax refunds to 120 families. Since then, Ladder Up has expanded its services to include college financial aid assistance and financial education, officially adopting its name in 2008 to reflect a broader mission of helping individuals climb out of poverty. In 2018, a merger with the Center for Economic Progress further enhanced its capacity to serve low-income individuals and families.

Impact

Ladder Up has served over 750,000 people, returning $1.42 billion in economic benefits through critical tax refunds and financial aid for education.
