La Troupe Makandal
EIN: 11-2676496 · Brooklyn, NY
Our Story
La Troupe Makandal was established in 1973 by a passionate group of young artists from Port-au-Prince, inspired by the legacy of an eighteenth-century revolutionary. After relocating to New York City in 1981, the troupe attracted new talent dedicated to celebrating black history and culture. Under the guidance of Master Drummer Frisner Augustin, the company has produced numerous performances and educational programs that honor the rich music and dance traditions of Haiti.
Impact
In recent years, the Artist Relief Fund has provided crucial assistance to families in Haiti facing both natural and human-made disasters, while also re-releasing vintage music albums to promote Haitian culture.
