Nurturing BIPOC Writers

Our Story

Kweli, meaning "truth" in Swahili, has been dedicated to nurturing emerging BIPOC writers since 2009. Under the guidance of founding editor Laura Pegram, Kweli Journal offers a quarterly online literary journal, year-long fellowships, workshops, and an annual writers' conference. This commitment fosters a community where diverse narratives are celebrated and amplified.

Our Impact

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Kweli relies on the generosity of readers and grants from esteemed organizations. Support from the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts has been crucial, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing Kweli to continue its vital work in the literary community.
