Our Story
Founded in 1974 by Joe Overstreet, Corrine Jennings, and Samuel C. Floyd, Kenkeleba House is dedicated to supporting African American culture. Located in New York City’s East Village, it began with experimental projects aimed at assisting African American, Caribbean, and African artists in developing and documenting their work. The name Kenkeleba, derived from the Seh-Haw plant of West Africa, symbolizes spiritual, nutritional, and healing values.
