Our Story
Justice Defenders, originally founded as the African Prisons Project in 2007, emerged from the urgent need to address the injustices faced by prisoners in Uganda. Inspired by firsthand experiences of caring for dying prisoners, the organization evolved to focus on providing legal education and training to vulnerable communities. This mission aims to empower individuals with the skills necessary to navigate the justice system effectively.
Impact
Since its inception, Justice Defenders has trained over 300 auxiliary paralegals and provided free legal services to more than 100,000 imprisoned clients. This effort has led to the release of 37,000 incarcerated individuals, allowing them to reunite with their families. Operating in Uganda, Kenya, and The Gambia, the organization envisions serving one million clients by 2030.
