Just Economics of Western North Carolina (JE) is a dedicated organization based in Asheville, NC, committed to fostering a just and sustainable economy that benefits all residents. Born from the Asheville-Buncombe Living Wage Campaign, JE has been at the forefront of advocating for living wages since 2006. The organization has successfully passed the first living wage ordinance in the region, ensuring that Asheville City employees receive a living wage. However, this achievement was just the beginning.

JE has expanded its mission to address broader economic issues, including affordable housing and better transit options. With a focus on grassroots organizing, JE engages community members, particularly low-wage workers, to shape policies that promote economic justice. The organization now boasts the largest voluntary Living Wage Certification program in the country, demonstrating its commitment to improving the lives of workers across multiple counties.

Since its inception, Just Economics has put over $20 million into the hands of low-wage workers, significantly improving their quality of life. This year, JE collaborated with the Living Wage Coalition of Transylvania County to pass a paid parental leave policy in Brevard, making it one of the few rural municipalities in North Carolina to implement such a progressive measure. By centering the voices of those affected by economic injustice, JE ensures that solutions are informed by real experiences and needs.
