JET

Our Story

Journey Into Education & Teaching Inc (JET) was founded by a dedicated team of educators from UMass Dartmouth, Bristol Community College, and local school districts to tackle the pressing issue of teacher shortages and low retention rates in high-need schools. Under the leadership of Pam Herrup and Karen O’Connor, JET has successfully guided over 110 paraprofessionals towards earning their bachelor’s degrees and teacher licensure in its first decade. In 2016, JET became a program of the Massachusetts Foundation for Teaching and Learning, expanding its reach to 11 districts across the state.

Impact

JET is making significant strides in closing the teacher diversity gap, with 63% of participants being people of color, compared to just 21% of teachers in partner districts. Most participants are first-generation college students from the communities they serve. With 70% of JET participants on track to earn a bachelor’s degree, the program is enhancing college outcomes for adult learners, changing lives since 2007.
