Our Story

In 1999, a dedicated group of John’s Island members gathered to address a pressing need in Indian River County. Recognizing that local organizations were struggling to fund essential capital improvements, they established the John’s Island Foundation. With the guidance of local attorney John Moore, the Foundation was formed to raise funds from the John’s Island community, specifically targeting capital grants for agencies serving those in need. Under the leadership of its first president, Ellie McCabe, the Foundation quickly gained momentum, raising $427,831 by the end of its first fiscal year and awarding $278,270 in grants to 22 agencies, including significant contributions to the Gifford Youth Achievement Center and Habitat for Humanity.

Impact

Over its 24-year history, the John’s Island Foundation has provided more than $16 million in capital grants to nonprofit agencies in Indian River County. By focusing exclusively on capital needs, the Foundation ensures that its grants deliver lasting benefits, enhancing the capacity of local organizations to serve the community effectively.
