About the John Howard Association
Founded in 1901, the John Howard Association (JHA) is Illinois' only independent citizen correctional oversight organization. Named after the pioneering prison reformer John Howard, JHA monitors conditions in every adult and juvenile prison across the state. By serving as the eyes and ears of the public, JHA advocates for humane treatment and systemic reform within Illinois' correctional facilities.
Impact of JHA's Work
For over 120 years, JHA has been instrumental in uncovering issues within the prison system and advocating for meaningful reforms. The organization’s efforts lead to improved conditions for thousands of incarcerated individuals, promoting rehabilitation and better outcomes for communities.
