For over forty years, the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes (now known as Makom) has been a beacon of hope and support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Montgomery County, Maryland. Founded by visionary families, Makom was established to ensure that every person with IDD has a place where they can live independently, with dignity and choice, while connecting with their Jewish heritage in a meaningful way.

A Legacy of Support and Growth

In 1982, a dedicated group of parents, led by Bob and Joy Cohen, opened the first group home, marking the beginning of a transformative journey. Over the decades, Makom has evolved from merely providing housing to offering a comprehensive range of community living supports, career development, and post-secondary education planning through the MOST program. The organization is committed to creating culturally competent and accessible health and clinical supports, ensuring that every individual can thrive.
