Our Story

Founded in 1980 by a group of dedicated volunteers, the Jefferson City Rape and Abuse Crisis Service (RACS) emerged from a profound need to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The organization began with a 24/7 hotline, evolving into a certified nonprofit in 1981. By 1982, RACS established safe houses to shelter those fleeing abuse, and in 1999, a new shelter was completed, designed to house 40 guests. Today, RACS continues to provide essential services at no cost to survivors, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for healing.

Impact

In 2023, RACS provided 18,746 services to 1,313 survivors, including 9,879 residential services and 2,255 hotline calls. The organization’s outreach advocates offered critical court and general advocacy services, while licensed professional counselors delivered 1,769 hours of counseling to 224 survivors. RACS is committed to transforming lives through compassionate support and resources.
