Seventy years ago, a small group of families on Aquidneck Island envisioned a vibrant community where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities could thrive. This revolutionary idea led to the establishment of The James L. Maher Center in 1953, inspired by the Maher family, particularly Jim and Mary Maher, whose youngest daughter, Mary Ann, had Down syndrome. Jim Maher, a prominent figure in Newport's history, championed the cause of inclusivity and support for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Over the decades, The Maher Center has evolved to meet the changing needs of the community. From operating a school and summer camp to providing day programs, the center has continuously adapted its offerings. Today, it provides a comprehensive range of community-based social and recreational programs, employment opportunities, and supportive residential services across Aquidneck Island and the East Bay.

At the heart of The Maher Center's mission is the commitment to foster independence, dignity, and integration for individuals with disabilities. The center offers personalized vocational training in horticulture and culinary arts, utilizing professional settings like the Maher Garden Center and a fully licensed kitchen facility.
