Into The Light Horse Rescue & Sanctuary

Our Story

Into the Light Horse Rescue and Sanctuary was inspired by a newborn foal named Dove. The journey began in the spring of 2015 at a Colorado feedlot notorious for selling horses to slaughter in Mexico. Amidst the chaos of the feedlot, a young mare named Phantom gave birth to Dove, a filly marked by a white dove on her side. Recognizing the urgency of their situation, founder Reneit Opperman acted swiftly to rescue them from impending doom.

Unfortunately, the conditions at the feedlot took a toll on Dove's health. Despite the best efforts of veterinarians, she succumbed to an infection just six weeks after her birth, leaving Phantom and Reneit heartbroken. This tragedy ignited a passion within Reneit to advocate for the countless horses facing similar fates. Thus, Into the Light was born, symbolizing the transition from darkness to the light of freedom for horses in peril.

Our Impact

Since its inception, Into the Light Horse Rescue and Sanctuary has successfully rescued 90 horses, providing them with rehabilitation and a chance at a loving home. Each horse is treated with the care and compassion they deserve, ensuring they never again face the horrors of the slaughter pipeline.
