About International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War

Founded in 1980 during the Cold War, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) emerged from a collaboration between Soviet and American doctors who recognized that their shared commitment to health transcended ideological divides. Co-founders Drs. Bernard Lown, Jim Muller, Eric Chivian, and Herb Abrams from the US, alongside Drs. Evgueni Chazov, Mikhail Kuzin, and Leonid Ilyin from the Soviet Union, united to conduct vital research on the catastrophic effects of nuclear warfare. Their powerful message reached millions, warning that nuclear war would be the ultimate epidemic with no cure.

Impact of IPPNW

IPPNW has successfully united physicians across political divides, educating both health professionals and the public about the dire consequences of nuclear warfare. Their advocacy has led to significant policy changes and contributed to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, adopted by the United Nations in July 2017. This treaty was a pivotal achievement for the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which was launched by IPPNW and awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.
