Our Story
International House Berkeley is part of a historic movement that began in 1924 with the opening of the first International House in New York City. Founded by Harry Edmonds, inspired by his encounter with a Chinese student, this initiative aimed to support foreign students and promote intercultural understanding. With the backing of philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr., the Berkeley location opened its doors on August 18, 1930, becoming the largest student housing complex in the Bay Area and the first coeducational residence west of New York. Today, International House Berkeley continues to be a vital hub for students from diverse backgrounds, fostering lifelong friendships and leadership skills for a more just and peaceful world.
