About the International Brain Injury Association

The International Brain Injury Association (IBIA) was founded in 1993 by Dr. George A. Zitnay and Martin B. Foil, Jr. after an international meeting in Oxford, UK. Recognizing the need for a multidisciplinary approach to brain injury, IBIA was established to foster collaboration among professionals and families worldwide.

Impact on Brain Injury Care

IBIA has played a pivotal role in developing evidence-based guidelines for the treatment and management of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Collaborating with the World Health Organization, IBIA led the formation of the WHO Neurotrauma Committee, which has significantly influenced TBI care standards globally.
