Our Story

Founded in 1971 by behavioral psychologist Dr. Laura Phillips, the Institute of Human Behavior Research and Education established The Phillips Academy to serve students with complex learning needs. Originally created to support clients inadequately served by public schools, the Academy has evolved over the decades while remaining committed to nurturing educational environments. With state certification achieved in 1981, the Academy has collaborated with over 16 Bay Area public school districts, providing specialized education for more than 50 years. In 2012, the school was renamed to honor Dr. Phillips, reflecting its dedication to personalized learning and positive relationships.

Impact

The Phillips Academy is dedicated to addressing the needs of the whole child, offering a personalized educational experience for students with diverse and complex learning and emotional styles. The program emphasizes culturally responsive pedagogy, promoting equity and inclusion, and prepares students for successful transitions to independent learning environments and various post-secondary opportunities.
