Our Story
Founded in 1977 by Marsha C. Botzer, Ingersoll Gender Center emerged as a response to the evolving discussions surrounding gender identity. Initially starting with a support group inspired by the Seattle Counseling Service, Ingersoll has expanded its reach and developed specific programs tailored for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals. In 1984, the organization became a formal not-for-profit, enhancing its service capacity and commitment to advocacy.
For over 40 years, Ingersoll has maintained a weekly support group, fostering a community of mutual support and understanding. The organization has been instrumental in advocating for policy changes, including the inclusion of gender identity and expression in Washington State’s 2006 Law Against Discrimination. Through peer-led support groups, community organizing, and educational initiatives, Ingersoll continues to champion the rights and dignity of all individuals.
